Mary Baker Eddy
Mary Baker Eddy (1821–1910) considered herself a spiritual pioneer whose work encompassed the disciplines of science, theology, and medicine. After her discovery of God’s laws as powerful spiritual mandates, always present and operating to heal, redeem, and bless humanity, she devoted her life to practicing, teaching, and sharing this healing Science of Christianity.
Mary Baker Eddy discovered the biblically based system of healing through prayer known as Christian Science, and established The Church of Christ, Scientist, to preserve and extend it. A native of New Hampshire, she overcame both personal challenges and the prejudices of her time to become an influential author, healer, and religious leader. Her achievements include establishing a religious movement, starting numerous publications—an international newspaper among them—and writing a groundbreaking textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, that has brought inspiration and healing to millions of people around the world.
The Mary Baker Eddy Library (www.MaryBakerEddyLibrary.org), located in Boston, provides public access to her extensive writings and historic documents.
Mary Baker Eddy studied the Bible her whole life. In 1866, she experienced a dramatic recovery from a life-threatening accident after reading one of Jesus’ healings. From that moment, she wanted to know how she had been healed. She read the Bible and prayed for answers. It became clear to her that spiritual healing was based on divine laws of God, Spirit. She proved that these laws could be applied by anyone to heal every form of human suffering and sin.
